Luz Negra
undercommons studies program
LUZ NEGRA (Black Light) Undercommons Studies Program is a poethical practice that emerged during the pandemic years in Brazil, although the program's name—as a proposition by Denise Ferreira da Silva—only appeared in 2023. The year 2020 marked one of the most critical phases of the COVID-19 pandemic. Amidst the chaos it caused in Brazilian society, a group of women from the West zone of Rio de Janeiro organized to offer a collective Reiki practice that was could be held remotely. This initiative led to two years of collective care and actions on different frontlines, all united by Reiki. The reported results included reduced anxiety, improved sleep, a decrease in domestic conflicts, and a focus on self-care.
Since 2020 the Program organized a yearly course covering Reiki initiations, specialization, and professional training. This free initiative enabled more than 20 women to spread this practice of care and self-defense in their neighbourhoods. The methodology included in-person meetings and following the pandemic, in-person events. The course covered the history and practice of Reiki as well as the principles of poethical practice. Throughout the courses participants present and discuss important issues emerging from their daily lives, interweaving care and organization in events called Poethical Encounters.
Planning for the Luz Negra Program was launched in late 2022. The registration process attracted 61 women, from whom thirty were selected, including a quota reserved for young women. There was a balanced distribution of participants across the neighborhoods of Rio’s West Zone—namely Campo Grande, Guaratib, Sepetiba, Santa Cruz, and Vargem Grande—thus fostering territorial networking. A total of 70 hours of virtual sessions and in-person meetings took place between May 2023 and December 2024.
Key in-person events included the Luz Negra Program’s inaugural event in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, attended by 60 people; the Spring Gathering in Magé (a city in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area); and an in-person training session on Reiki and anti-racist education held on September 14, 2024, at the Quilombo Dona Bilina Community Garden in Campo Grande—another neighborhood in Rio’s West Zone.
The last Luz Negra Program concluded on December 7, 2025; on that same day, two rooms dedicated to Reiki—now known as Luz Negra Spaces—were launched: the first at Quilombo Dona Bilina and the second in Vargem Grande. These spaces need additional funding and logistical support to be able to offer additional treatments for women facing patriarchal violence, organizing discussion circles in addition to Reiki and Tarot treatments and trainings, reflexology, and other integrative practices.
In the second half of 2026 two new Luz Negra spaces are opening: the Ateliê Elementum/Espaço Luz Negra in the city centre and the Espaço Luz Negra in Vila Aliança, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro.
